KUCHING: The conferment of Japan’s 2025 Imperial Autumn Decorations – The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg reflects his outstanding leadership and far-sighted vision.

Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the prestigious honour serves as international recognition of Abang Johari’s efforts in strengthening bilateral relations between Sarawak and Japan.

He said the Premier’s continuous efforts in implementing progressive development policies, particularly in the areas of investment, green energy and the digital economy, have brought Sarawak to a commendable level of advancement.

“Under his leadership, Sarawak has become increasingly recognised as a progressive, competitive and influential state in the region,” he said in a statement published by the Astana Negeri Sarawak.

The Head of State and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi also conveyed their congratulations to Abang Johari for the award received.

“We also extend our prayers for the Premier’s continued good health, strength and wisdom to lead Sarawak towards lasting prosperity and well-being for its people,” the statement read.

Earlier, the Embassy of Japan, in a statement, said Abang Johari was among the recipients of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations announced by the government of Japan, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to promoting regional exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Malaysia.

According to the embassy, Abang Johari has been instrumental in strengthening economic and energy cooperation between Japan and Sarawak, particularly in renewable energy sectors such as hydrogen and ammonia.

“Under his leadership, Sarawak has forged close partnerships with leading Japanese corporations, supporting Japan’s energy transition and long-term energy security through the stable supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“Beyond the energy sector, he has championed environmental collaborations involving Japanese universities and organisations, focusing on reforestation and biodiversity conservation projects,” the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy added that Abang Johari’s efforts have also extended to academic and youth exchange programmes, which have helped deepen ties and mutual understanding between Japan and Sarawak.

“His dedication and leadership have left a lasting impact on the friendship and cooperation between Japan and Malaysia,” the statement said.
