KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Bhd, through its operations arm, Syarikat SESCO Bhd (SESCO), has stepped up enforcement against electricity theft following the discovery of two illegal connections at stores of the same grocery chain in Siburan and Serian.
According to SESCO, its meter inspection team at the Siburan outlet found hidden direct-tapping cables above the ceiling that bypassed the electricity meter and drew power directly from the main supply.
Meanwhile, a similar set-up was detected at the Serian outlet, where cables were concealed behind the shop signboard near the five-foot way.
The preliminary assessments estimate monthly losses of over RM13,000 in Siburan and about RM6,800 in Serian.
Both illegal connections were dismantled on site, and the tampering equipment was seized.
Police reports have been lodged, and investigations are ongoing under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which carries penalties of up to RM200,000 in fines and/or five years’ imprisonment upon conviction.
Sarawak Energy stressed that electricity theft is not only unlawful but dangerous, with unauthorised connections risking electrocution, fires, damage to appliances and even loss of life, while straining the power system and potentially disrupting supply to neighbouring premises.
Sesco said its meter inspection teams undergo continuous technical training to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated theft methods to strengthen enforcement.
These efforts are supported by ongoing investments in advanced detection technologies and real-time monitoring systems.
Sarawak Energy reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on power theft and its commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable electricity supply for all customers.
Businesses and members of the public are reminded that tampering with electrical systems is a serious offence and are urged to avoid illegal connections.
In response to these cases, Sarawak Energy will step up enforcement, particularly in outstation areas, and urges the public to report suspected electricity theft anonymously via the Sarawak Energy Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or email customercare@sarawakenergy.com.
