KUCHING: A permanent trading area is set to be developed in Bandar Baru Semariang, aimed at providing greater comfort and convenience for traders and residents.
The proposal was announced by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor, Datuk Hilmy Othman, during the launch of ‘Tamu Desa’ and Food Society Sukma Ria, a modern community hub designed to support local entrepreneurs and enhance public spaces in the city.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and Federal-State Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, guest of honour at the event, expressed strong support for the initiative.
“It is encouraging to see projects like these that create opportunities for local entrepreneurs while improving public spaces for the community.
“Platforms such as Food Society and ‘Tamu Desa’ SUKMA RIA provide small traders with a permanent space to grow, while making public areas more attractive and accessible for everyone,” she said today during the launch.
She added that initiatives of this nature not only boost business prospects but also nurture social responsibility and an entrepreneurial spirit among residents.

In his speech, Hilmy highlighted DBKU’s continued commitment to community development.
“We are shaping a clean and harmonious city, balancing progress with the wellbeing of the people.
“Our initiatives go beyond physical infrastructure; we aim to foster social responsibility, integrity and entrepreneurship among residents,” he said.
He also acknowledged the support of agencies such as Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), which have upgraded market areas and created additional trading spaces.
“At Kubah Ria, SEDC has developed the riverbank near the Satok Bridge, while FAMA has upgraded a new market area, both receiving operational approval from DBKU.
“The upgraded market will open to the public by the end of this month, with FAMA hosting a festival to showcase the new facilities to all Kuching residents,” he added.
Looking ahead, the mayor said DBKU plans to improve public facilities, including pedestrian paths, community rest areas, and public toilets, while transforming vacant residential spaces for beautification.
“Our aim is to create a modern, attractive, and people-friendly city,” he said.
