KUCHING: A state assemblyman has called for greater awareness and accessibility of government welfare programmes, stressing that every Sarawakian, especially the elderly, single mothers, youth, and persons with disabilities, deserves fair and timely assistance.
Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, made the call when officiating the Social Welfare Assistance briefing jointly organised by his Kota Sentosa Service Centre and the Kuching Division Welfare Department (JKM) for community leaders in the constituency.
The briefing covered major state welfare initiatives under the Sarawak Government, including Bantuan Warga Emas (BWE), Bantuan Kanak-kanak (BKK), Bantuan Orang Kurang Upaya (BKU), Bantuan Penjagaan OKU/Pesakit Terlantar (BPT), Bantuan Am Negeri (BA), Bantuan Belia Beliawanis (BBB), Bantuan Anak Pelihara (BAP), Bantuan Khas Pesakit Buah Pinggang (BKPBP), Bantuan Perubatan (BP), Bantuan Alat Tiruan (BAT), Bantuan Tabung Segera (TBS), Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC), Bantuan Ihsan Kematian (BIK) and the Senior Citizen Health Benefit (SCHB).
A hands-on session was also conducted to train community leaders to assist residents in applying for these benefits effectively, particularly for vulnerable groups such as dialysis patients, bedridden individuals and low-income families.
Yap commended the Welfare Department’s proactive outreach, describing it as a reflection of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government’s compassionate governance under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“These programmes are not merely financial assistance; they symbolise compassion, dignity and appreciation for our senior citizens, youth and families facing health or economic challenges,” he said.
He emphasised that equipping community leaders with accurate information strengthens their role as bridges between the government and the people, ensuring that no one is left behind.
“As your elected representative, I will continue to work closely with JKM and relevant agencies to make sure every resident of Kota Sentosa fully benefits from the GPS government’s people-first policies,” Yap assured.
