KUCHING: Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, praised Head of State (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s convocation address as a strong reminder of Sarawak’s unity, identity and constitutional rights.
According to Yap, Wan Junaidi’s speech was more than a message to graduates; it was a call to action for all Sarawakians to remain steadfast in defending their rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
He said Sarawakians must express heartfelt gratitude to Wan Junaidi for his visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to safeguarding the state’s position as an equal partner in Malaysia.
“As Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, I fully echo Tun Pehin Sri’s call for unity in defending Sarawak’s rights through education, competence and integrity,” said Yap in a statement today.
“We must nurture a generation that understands both the constitutional foundation and the moral responsibility of being Sarawakians to develop our state with pride, honesty and wisdom because these are the values of nation-building that supports Sarawak’s transformation agenda under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, driven by innovation, clean governance and inclusive progress, guided by his vision of ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur‘.”
Yap also highlighted that while many political parties often discuss the MA63, few have demonstrated genuine commitment as shown by Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
He pointed out that Sarawakians have yet to hear a clear and consistent position from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak on critical issues such as education autonomy and health autonomy, both of which are vital for improving the daily lives of the people.
He stressed that these are not partisan demands but essential measures to translate the promises of the MA63 into meaningful outcomes on the ground.
“Integrity is your shield, and character is your compass,” he said.
He stressed that this principle must guide every level of public service, adding that corruption weakens communities while integrity builds trust, quoting Wan Junaidi’s own words.
He commended the GPS’ Sarawak Government for establishing the Ombudsman Department, which serves as a model of clean and accountable governance reflecting Sarawak’s determination to uphold transparency and integrity.
Yap further urged Sarawakian youth, particularly those from Kota Sentosa, to embrace their roles in shaping the state’s future.
As Sarawak moves forward into a new era of digital economy, green energy and industrial innovation, he encouraged young graduates to seek purpose beyond employment, to use their knowledge and creativity to build, innovate and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
“Let us all stand united as one Sarawakian family to defend our rights, nurture our talents, and move our beloved state forward toward a Sarawak that is truly ‘Maju dan Makmur’,” he urged.
