ESU Malaysia hosts global conference on English as a global language

THE English-Speaking Union (ESU) of Malaysia, renowned for organising the prestigious national public speaking competition for Malaysians aged 16 to 20 over the past two decades, proudly hosted the ESU International Conference Meeting (ICM) 2025 in Kuala Lumpur from September 29 to October 2, 2025.

The conference brought together 30 delegates and guests from Britain, the United States, France, Australia, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Pakistan, while representatives from about ten other countries participated virtually.

The annual ICM rotates among ESU member countries, with London hosting it once every four years.

This year’s conference focused on the exchange of ideas and knowledge in promoting English as a universal and global language. Discussions underscored the importance of English in building bridges between cultures, fostering mutual understanding, and empowering young people to communicate confidently on a global platform.

With a presence in over 50 countries, ESU continues to play a pivotal role in advancing oracy and international dialogue.

Miles Young, chair of ESU, reaffirmed the organisation’s mission, stating that ESU will continue to help young people build the speaking and listening skills they need to thrive and contribute to a more collaborative world.

Charles Byrne, director-general of ESU, added that promoting proficiency in spoken English is an essential means of cultural exchange and understanding, noting that ICM 2025 had also reaffirmed ESU’s commitment to supporting young people worldwide in developing their oracy skills.

YAM Tunku Dara Naquiah Almarhum Tuanku Jaafar, chairman of ESU Malaysia, expressed pride in hosting the global event, remarking:

“The Conference was more than just a meeting of minds. It reaffirmed our commitment to promoting English as a bridge for international understanding and cooperation while presenting Malaysia on the world stage as a great tourist destination.”

She also thanked sponsors and partners for their continued support of ESU Malaysia’s annual English initiatives.

“English helps build confidence and unlock opportunities,” she said. “ESU Malaysia encourages young people to speak up and become effective and impactful communicators so that they can contribute positively both nationally and globally.”

Beyond the conference sessions, delegates were treated to a series of cultural and social experiences showcasing

Malaysia’s heritage and hospitality. Highlights included a dinner at the Petronas Club, with visits to the Petronas Twin Towers and the Skybridge, as well as a lunch at Merdeka 118. Participants also embarked on a day trip to Melaka, stopping at the Tuanku Jaafar Royal Gallery in Seremban.

To further highlight Malaysia’s cultural diversity and natural beauty, post-conference tours were arranged to Langkawi, Penang, Sabah, and Sarawak, offering delegates a glimpse of the nation’s rich traditions, vibrant culture, and scenic landscapes.

The event concluded with a farewell dinner celebrating ESU Malaysia’s 25th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to empower youth and promote English as a tool for unity, understanding, and opportunity.

Through this landmark conference, ESU Malaysia not only reinforced its role in fostering global dialogue but also showcased Malaysia’s warmth, diversity, and growing prominence on the international stage.
