VALLADOLID: The partnership between Sarawak and Valladolid is brimming with potential, says Valladolid Mayor Jesús Julio Carnero.
Describing the partnership as a model for international culinary exchange, he praised Sarawak’s dedication, creativity, and teamwork that was evident in the state’s performance during this year’s World Tapas Competition.
“There are a lot of big opportunities. Many things can be developed from this partnership, and the most important thing is that Sarawak has already shown how to do it, and the state does it very well,” he said.
The mayor expressed gratitude for the invitation to attend next year’s World National Tapas and World Asia Competition and Food Festival and Exhibition 2026 in Miri, Sarawak.
He also lauded Valladolid’s culinary scene, describing the city as full of vitality, gastronomic creativity, and international friendship.
Acknowledging the challenges of organising such events, Carnero said the city’s team remained strong and committed.

“Even though there are different obstacles every year, our team is strong and dedicated. What matters is that we work together. Human beings are meant to come together—preferably around a table. That’s how we overcome anything: together,” he said.
Meanwhile, director of the World Tapas Competition Angel Moreton highlighted the strong performance of Asian chefs this year, particularly from Malaysia.
He said the results reflected the excellent work being done in the national and Asian competitions.
“These results show that after all the hard work, you now have chefs who can go far and achieve remarkable things. Sarawak is clearly on the right path toward success, and I hope this is just the beginning of many more good things to come,” he said.
On the Sarawak-Valladolid collaboration, Moreton pointed out that the partnership, which began two years ago, had been steadily expanding and held limitless potential.
“I’m sure we will achieve great things together, making the world feel smaller while elevating gastronomy even further,” he said.
Morten also offered advice to aspiring chefs in Sarawak and across Malaysia, urging them to study this year’s winners and continue working hard.
“I know the journey may seem tough, but if you put in the effort, it will be worth it,” he added.
