KUCHING: The Borneo Satellite Network (BoSaN), spearheaded by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) under the leadership of Professor Dr Ramlah Zainudin, is charting a new chapter in cross-border scientific collaboration to protect Borneo’s biodiversity and tackle the impacts of climate change.
Established in February 2024, BoSaN brings together a consortium of researchers from UNIMAS, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN) in Indonesia, and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
“The network serves as a dynamic, open-access platform that digitises and shares real-time environmental data, advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships).
“BoSaN’s work is grounded in the ‘Three Cs’ —Climate Change, Conservation of Biodiversity, and Cooperation of Partnerships.
“Originally launched through the ‘Zoologists Go Global’ programme, the initiative first partnered with UNTAN in 2024, followed by UBD later that year, marking a significant milestone in regional scientific collaboration,” UNIMAS said in a press release.
UNIMAS added that the initiative has already secured 28 international matching grants and demonstrated its research capacity at the BoSaN Symposium and AiBoB Training Workshop in September, equipping UNTAN researchers with technical skills for managing the advanced AiBoB digital data repository.
Beyond academia, BoSaN actively engages local communities through the KKN Global Inisiatif Rakan Strategi BoSaN.
