SEBUYAU: The electricity supply upgrading project in the Samarahan Division, scheduled to begin in Dec 2025 and expected to be completed by 2028, is set to significantly improve power reliability for thousands of residents across the division.
Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the RM150 million initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted electricity access for the people.
“This project is a strategic initiative to increase the power supply capacity in the Samarahan Division by using Medium Voltage Covered Conductor (MVCC) technology.
“The MVCC is an insulated medium-voltage cable system that will reduce frequent electricity supply disruptions caused by the use of uninsulated lines that are exposed to severe weather, lightning strikes, animals, or contact with tree branches planted under and near the lines,” Julaihi said.
He said this in his speech during the officiating ceremony of the Samarahan Division Electricity Supply Upgrading Project at Kampung Sampat, Sebangan Hall, here today (Nov 23).
The ceremony was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He added that the upgrade will cover the districts of Samarahan, Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Sebuyau, Simunjan and Gedong.
“The scope of this project includes installation of MVCC lines from Asajaya to the Batang Sadong Bridge (estimated 22.5 km),two submarine cables crossing the Batang Sadong River (1.8 km) and installation of MVCC lines from the Batang Sadong Bridge to Sebuyau, Simunjan, and Gedong (estimated 110 km).
“This also includes the installation of fiber optic cable from Asajaya to Sebuyau (estimated 68.6 km)and reorganisation of lines and upgrading works, including transformer replacement, to meet current demand,” he explained.
Julaihi said the improvements will not only reduce damage to household and business electrical equipment but also stimulate local economic growth.
“Indirectly, it will stimulate local economic growth and help support increased new investments through the production of local products in the modern agriculture sector as well as small and large industries.
“In addition, residents’ income will be increased through the creation of more jobs and business opportunities.
“In other words, this project is not merely an effort to improve the quality of electricity supply, but also serves as a platform to enhance the quality and well-being of the local community,” he said.
