THE Sarawak government will channel RM50 million next year to support 100,000 senior citizens under the Senior Citizens Health Benefit programme, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of vulnerable groups across the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative, introduced in August 2024, provides cashless outpatient treatment at panel clinics for senior citizens from households earning RM7,000 and below.

“Each eligible recipient is entitled to up to RM500 per year to ease the cost of medical care. The substantial allocation for next year is expected to ensure continued access to essential healthcare services for elderly Sarawakians statewide.

“In addition to healthcare support, the state government has also strengthened assistance for bereaved families.

“The Death Compassionate Assistance for Kenyalang Gold Card holders will be extended, offering RM1,800 to help cover funeral expenses. A total of RM10 million has been set aside for this programme under the 2026 Budget,” he said.

He said this when tabling the 2026 Budget in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.

As part of efforts to enhance social support infrastructure, he said the government will invest in new facilities to assist individuals and families facing hardship or special challenges.

“The 2026 allocation includes RM3 million for the establishment of a special need community centre, RM1 million for social support centres in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, Lawas and Mukah, and RM600,000 for temporary shelters for the low-income recovery community in Sibu and Bintulu,” he added.

The state government will also continue to empower vulnerable groups through inclusive economic programmes.

Abang Johari said that in 2026, RM2.6 million has been allocated for the Women and Family Development Programme, which includes skills training, empowerment initiatives and support for women-headed households.

“Another RM2.5 million will be channelled to the Usahawan Mikro Kebajikan Programme, benefiting 835 micro-entrepreneurs from the B40 group, including single mothers, widows and persons with disabilities.

“To support small-scale income generation, RM600,000 has been set aside for the Low-Income Family Empowerment Programme, targeting 120 families venturing into small businesses.

“Additionally, RM600,000 will be provided to Non-Governmental Organizations to strengthen community-based social intervention efforts,” he said.
