THE Sarawak government will allocate RM450 million in 2026 as Alternative Funding to accelerate the continued implementation of the SMART tower projects and the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) initiative in another major push to close the digital divide across the State.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said in addition, RM27 million has been set aside for the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to support its operational requirements and fulfil its strategic role in coordinating digital development.

“The Sarawak Linking Urban, Rural and Nation (SALURAN) and Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) initiative continues to progress steadily. Phase 1 has been fully completed at a cost of RM24 million, while Phase 2 is now underway to further expand broadband access to underserved and remote communities.

“Through collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under JENDELA Phase 2, Sarawak is intensifying efforts to enhance 4G and 5G coverage, especially in areas affected by difficult terrain and widely scattered settlements,” he said.

He said this during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here Monday (Nov 24).

The SMART600 project remains a key driver of rural digital transformation, targeting improved connectivity at more than 1,000 rural locations.

“The initiative involves constructing 600 new communication towers, expected to benefit approximately 180,000 residents in areas such as Marudi in Miri and Belaga, as well as Sungai Belawai and Sungai Encheremin in Kapit,” he added.
As of July 2025, he said 587 towers have been completed, with 431 already activated using Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology.

The remaining towers will be commissioned in stages to ensure seamless and sustainable coverage rollout.

“To further support rural households, the State Government will also allocate RM20 million in 2026 to the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) to subsidise broadband charges under the MySRBN initiative.

“This assistance aims to reduce financial pressure on rural communities while enhancing digital inclusivity through affordable high-speed fixed wireless access,” he said.
