FOR Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, one of the most excited moments during the presentation of the Sarawak Budget 2026 was the increasing support for the rakyat through the Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS) assistance.

He considers the budget as practical and people-centric. Sarawak Tribune spoke to him further on the budget.

Sarawak Tribune: Which part of the Sarawak Budget 2026 are you personally most excited to see in action, and why?

Yap: I am most excited about the strengthened support for the rakyat through the SKAS assistance increase to RM950. This is a real, direct benefit for families earning RM5,000 and below. It shows that GPS doesn’t just talk about the rising cost of living — we act decisively to ease the burden, especially when federal policies are the major drivers of price increases. This increase will put more cash in the hands of those who need it most.

If you could describe the 2026 Budget in one simple word or phrase for ordinary rakyat, what would it be?

Practical and people-centred. Because every ringgit is focused on real solutions infrastructure, cost-of-living support, and long-term financial strength for Sarawak.

What’s one initiative in the budget that you think will make everyday life a little easier for people in your constituency?

For the people of Kota Sentosa, the most impactful initiative is the continued investment in urban infrastructure drainage upgrades, road improvements, monsoon channels and flood mitigation. These are long-standing issues caused by years of opposition neglect. The budget’s engineering-based, long-term approach will finally bring lasting solutions, not just seasonal drama or social media complaints.

Budget discussions can be serious — what was a light or memorable moment from this year’s sitting?

A subtle but memorable moment was when even the opposition acknowledged that the Premier is the most hardworking member of the Cabinet, a remark that drew quiet nods and smiles across the House. It was brief, but it reminded everyone that regardless of political differences, there are certain truths about leadership and dedication that all sides can agree on.

If the budget had a theme song, what vibe would it be energetic, calm, hopeful, or something else?

The vibe would definitely be steady and confident. Not flashy, not chaotic but strong, disciplined and forward-moving. Like a soundtrack that reflects Sarawak’s confidence in charting its own future through PCDS 2030, smart financial discipline, and responsible planning for our elderly, our communities, and our economic growth.
