KUCHING: The intricate heritage of keringkam (headscarf) embroidery took the spotlight today as the spouse of Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, attended the Keringkam Embroidery Arts Programme at Wisma SABATI – and even joined the workshop as a participant.
Fauziah spent time learning the delicate craft alongside other participants in the ‘Keringkam Class: Weaving Threads of Golden Heritage’, a hands-on session aimed at reviving interest in the traditional art form.
In her welcoming remarks, SABATI Craft and Culture Sub-Committee chairperson Datin Melinda Bucking Lawan said she hoped the course would open a path for more people to appreciate and promote the uniqueness of keringkam for future generations.
“In this course, we are not only learning embroidery techniques. We are carrying the responsibility of continuing this legacy,” she said.
She added that the participants’ presence reflected their deep commitment to learning and elevating one of Sarawak’s most treasured cultural art forms.
“Keringkam is not just a piece of fabric embroidered with gold thread. It is a narrative of patience, precision and refined expression.
“Every stitch tells a story, every pattern holds meaning and every strand is a symbol of timeless artistry that we must preserve,” she said.
The two-day programme, jointly organised by SABATI and CENTEXS, began today and will conclude on Thursday (November 27).
Also present were SABATI deputy president/acting president Datuk Doreen Mayang Uggah; SABATI honorary secretary Datin Amar Enn Ong Siok Ean; Sarawak MAKSAK Women’s chairperson Datuk Amar Baduyah Bujang; and SABATI honorary treasurer Datin Siti Shorgayah Ahmad Zaidin.
