NEXT year’s financial plans carry deep significance for families, children and vulnerable communities across Sarawak.
Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, who pointed this out, took time out to give her thoughts on the initiatives she is most eager to see implemented.
Q: Which part of the Sarawak Budget 2026 are you most excited to see?
I am most excited about the continued rollout of our cradle-to-grave initiatives under KPWK, which support Sarawakians at every stage of life, from early childhood to senior years.
Q: If you could describe the Budget in one phrase for the ordinary rakyat, what would it be?
A people-centric and comprehensive budget.
Q: What initiative will make everyday life easier for people in your constituency?
The construction of the Kampung Kekan-Medong road will truly bring smiles to our people. The state has allocated RM1.05 billion for rural roads and bridges, including the Medong-Kekan route under Strategic Thrust 5. This is not just a road; it is connectivity, access, opportunity, and relief for families who have waited for a long time.
Q: Budget sittings can be serious. Was there a memorable moment this year?
The increase in allowance for KMKK and councillors definitely lifted the mood. Councillors’ monthly allowances rise from RM300 to RM1,000, with RM1,000 medical benefits, while KMKK leaders receive an increase of RM400 in monthly remuneration. It was a good moment, as it recognises the hard work of people at the grassroots.
Q: If the Budget had a theme song, what vibe would it carry?
A hopeful, uplifting spirit, just like the direction we want for Sarawak, and the song title would be ‘Fly Kenyalang Fly – Fly High’.
