THE Sarawak government has allocated RM11.24 million in subsidies to encourage residential rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, reducing costs between RM8,000 and RM12,000.

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, said the subsidy aims to reduce installation costs, which range between RM15,000 and RM20,000 for a 4 kiloWatt-peak (kWp) system.

“Homeowners with landed properties who have yet to install a rooftop solar PV system are eligible for subsidies depending on the size of the system.

“This subsidy will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for applications made between Jan 1, 2025, and Dec 31, 2026,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the august House on Monday (Dec 1).

He said the initiative is part of the state’s effort to increase participation in the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme.

As of now, 35 NEM systems with a total capacity of 867 kiloWatt-peak (kWp) are operational, compared to 16 systems at the end of 2024.

“The NEM scheme allows excess energy generated by solar panels to be fed into the grid, reducing electricity bills for users. In addition to NEM, the Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Installation for Self-Consumption (SELCO) scheme supports private use of solar energy.

“Currently, there is one SELCO system operating in the Sama Jaya industrial area with a capacity of 600 kWp, and 12 other SELCO applications with a total capacity of 11,629 kWp are at various stages of implementation.”
