KUCHING: Those who wish to do business at the 15-day Kenyalang Chinese New Year Festive Sales in February have two weeks to apply for permits beginning Dec 2.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the Kenyalang Chinese New Year Festive Sales will take place next year from Feb 2 to Feb 16 at the Kenyalang Park Commercial Centre.
“Applications are open to the public, and the Kenyalang Park Commercial Centre will once again serve as the venue.
“As part of our long-standing practice, priority will be given to shop lot owners and tenants, and each shop lot may apply for a maximum of two trading spaces,” he said in a statement ion Monday (Dec 1).
He added that for this year’s event, the permit fees remain affordable and unchanged.
“Shop lot owners or tenants will pay RM100 per stall, while members of the public will pay RM150 per stall.
“A total of 277 stalls will be available. Out of these, 106 stalls are allocated to shop lot owners and tenants, and 171 stalls are allocated to the public,” he added.
This annual festive sales event carries a deeper purpose as it strengthens community ties, preserves cultural heritage, and most importantly, it empowers local micro-entrepreneurs.
“Many of our traders at Kenyalang are home-based sellers who bake, craft, design, and produce festive goods from their homes.
“For them, this marketplace is not just a place to sell. It is an opportunity to earn additional income, build customer networks, and share their creativity with the community,” he said.
Wee said that this reflects the values of SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, where economic opportunities are made accessible to all, especially small-scale and home-grown entrepreneurs.
“I encourage everyone to come to Kenyalang this coming Chinese New Year. Support our local traders. Celebrate with them. And help keep this cherished community tradition thriving for the benefit of culture and economic growth,” he said.
