SARAWAK has resolved 75 per cent of its problematic housing projects following intensified monitoring and enforcement under a technical task force.

Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said the Housing Projects Technical Committee, led by Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, had solved 43 out of 57 problematic projects, leaving the other 14 projects under various stages of intervention.

“Only one project in Sibu has been declared abandoned, representing two per cent of the 647 housing projects identified statewide.

“This positive development clearly displays the government’s commitment to defend the rights of homebuyers and ensure that developers comply with the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Ordinance 2013,” he told the State Legislative Assembly sitting during his ministerial winding-up speech.

For the record, 23 projects have been fully or partially completed or resolved; 20 have been successfully revived or resumed construction; 13 are currently at various stages of intervention.

He added that the ministry had intensified enforcement to ensure greater compliance across the sector.

“We have frozen the Housing Development Accounts of developers who fail to meet statutory requirements.

“This year alone, at least 20 compounds have been issued for various offences, reflecting stronger enforcement and higher compliance monitoring,” he said.

Furthermore, he said the developers associated with abandoned projects would be blacklisted and face further action if found to have caused or contributed to the abandonment.

Dr Sim shared that the ministry had taken relevant actions against developers involved in non-compliant projects.

“One case involved the misconduct of an architect who has been reported, which resulted in an RM60,000 fine from the Board of Architects Malaysia,” he added.
