SINGAPORE: Sarawak has welcomed Singapore’s proposal to open a consulate office in Kuching, calling it a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties between the republic and Malaysia, particularly in Borneo.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the move would create wider opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment and people-to-people relations.

He said Sarawak and Singapore have long established economic links, and the presence of a consulate would further ease various dealings, including worker mobility, business matters and new investment initiatives.

“We appreciate this as Malaysia-Singapore relations are very close, and the Sarawak Government welcomes the proposal because it will bring major benefits to bilateral ties and expand economic collaboration.

“We already have our trade and tourism office (STATOS) here in Singapore, so the opening of a consulate will further support bilateral relations and business engagements,” he said, according to a TVS news report.

Singapore’s intention was announced by its Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, held in conjunction with the 12th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat today.

Anwar said Malaysia had agreed to the proposal, including Singapore’s plan to establish another consulate office in Sabah.

“This will further strengthen relations between Malaysia and Singapore in the years ahead,” he said.

The report added that the establishment of additional consulate offices is expected to enhance diplomatic engagement and facilitate services for residents and the business community in East Malaysia.
