KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stands out as a true transformist, far beyond simply calling himself a reformist.

Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, said this is proven through Abang Johari’s capable leadership, which has successfully propelled Sarawak forward in digitalisation, infrastructure expansion, economic modernisation, and the strengthening of resource autonomy.

“We can see that Abang Johari is a genuine transformist, not just someone who labels himself as a reformist,” he stressed.

“Under his leadership, Sarawak has moved forward in digitalisation, infrastructure expansion, economic modernisation, and the strengthening of resource autonomy.”

Wan Junaidi said this during the launch of ‘Abang Johari: Sarawak’s First Premier, A Political Biography’ by Prof. Dr Michael Leigh at the Dayak Cultural Foundation here today.

He added that Abang Johari’s focus on both urban and rural development has also laid a strong foundation for sustainable growth and the long-term prosperity of the state.

“This people-centred and future-oriented leadership will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come.

“Abang Johari contributions, however, are recognised not only within Sarawak or Malaysia. His leadership has been acknowledged beyond our shores,” he reiterated.

“The recent award conferred upon him by the Government of Japan reflects international appreciation for his role in building meaningful partnerships and advancing Sarawak’s global profile.

*Such recognition speaks to the broader impact of his vision and diplomacy, and it reinforces the respect he commands on the regional and international stage.”

Therefore, he stressed, documenting Abang Johari’s life journey and leadership is an acknowledgment of his vision, dedication and steadfast commitment to the development of the state.

He explained that since assuming leadership of Sarawak, Abang Johari has consistently demonstrated leadership in strengthening the economy, driving digital transformation, and expanding the state’s autonomy over resource management.

“His leadership has always been for the people of Sarawak, reaching every corner of the state, from Tanjung Datu to Lawas, ensuring that no community is left behind,” Wan Junaidi said.

“At the same time, his initiatives to expand connectivity, uplift rural communities, and diversify the economy demonstrate his determination to build a resilient and modern Sarawak.”

Reflecting back, Wan Junaidi also shared his personal relationship with Abang Johari, which has lasted for more than 40 years, since December 1982.

“My own relationship with Abang Johari extends for over 40 years. It’s such a long time, since December 1982. We have walked the same political path and served together, sharing responsibilities in governance. Perhaps a different role. I was ‘exiled’ to Kuala Lumpur,” he quipped.

Through those experiences, Wan Junaidi said he came to know Abang Johari as a friend with integrity, a calm demeanour, and a deep commitment to public service, especially for Sarawak.

“Long before he assumed the office of Premier, I had observed his calm, deliberate approach to decision-making and his consistent sense of duty to the people. These qualities continue to define his leadership today,” he opined.

“We hope that his legacy will be remembered by all Sarawakians for the way he accelerated the state’s development through clear vision, strategic planning, and courageous decision-making.”
