BANGKOK: Coach Gu Yuan is confident that Sarawak’s Grace Wong Xiu Mei will soon surpass the 68m mark as she prepares for the Asian Games and future international competitions.

Malaysia’s hammer throw star, Grace Wong, continues to impress following her record-breaking 65.41m effort – a new national and SEA Games benchmark achieved today.
Gu, who has been overseeing her training in China, believes even greater distances are within reach.
“Today, throwing over 65 metres, I’m very happy. Grace is happy, I am happy, and Jackie Wong is happy as well,” she enthused.
“With continued focused training and support, I believe Grace can surpass 68 meters and possibly even reach 70 meters in the near future,” said Gu at the Suphachalasai National Stadium.
Gu also highlighted the importance of Grace’s training environment in China, particularly in Ningxia, a region in north-central China, where she has been able to train without distractions.
“Training in China means no disturbances – she can focus 100 to 200 per cent every day, and she’s happy.
“In Malaysia, there can be interruptions that affect concentration,” Gu added.
Looking ahead, Grace is targeting the 2026 Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games, and the 2027 SEA Games hosted by Malaysia.
With her current trajectory and strong backing, she is poised to be a formidable contender.
