KUCHING: A 67-year-old man was arrested for allegedly threatening two workers with a shotgun and firing two warning shots at a land-clearing site along Jalan Bako here on December 11.

Kuching Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said the workers, including a 24-year-old heavy machinery operator, were clearing the area after their company received approval from the Public Works Department (JKR) to begin work.

“The suspect ordered the victim and his co-worker to stop work immediately before firing two shots into the air as a warning for them to remove the heavy machinery from the project site.

“The victim also told police he was not aware of any compensation arrangements, as he was only operating the heavy machinery and was not involved in the management of the project,” it said in a statement.

The incident took place on forested land undergoing clearing for road construction.

The suspect has been remanded to assist investigations under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960.

Police advised the public not to resort to intimidation or violence and to channel disputes through the proper authorities.
