SIBURAN: Road safety is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation from all road users, not just enforcement agencies.

Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus said safety on the roads should be viewed as a collective duty involving drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians, especially during the festive season when traffic volume increases.

“Road safety is not the responsibility of one or two agencies alone.

“It involves everyone, drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians as each plays an important role in ensuring safety on the roads,” he told reporters after officiating at a road safety awareness campaign in conjunction with Christmas celebration at the Shell petrol station here today.

John added that the campaign also featured the screening of a road safety awareness video aimed at reminding motorists and motorcyclists of the importance of responsible and cautious driving behaviour.

He expressed concern over the frequent occurrence of road accidents, particularly at U-turns and junctions along the Siburan stretch, noting that negligence and failure to observe traffic signs were among the contributing factors.

“We often hear about accidents happening at certain locations.

“Road users must be more aware of their surroundings, respect traffic signs and ensure they are physically and mentally fit before getting behind the wheel,” he said.

He hoped that awareness programmes such as this would help instil a stronger sense of responsibility among road users and encourage safer behaviour on the roads.

“With better awareness and cooperation from everyone, we hope road users can travel safely and reach their destinations without incident, especially during the Christmas festive period,” he added.

As part of the initiative, 50 helmets were donated to motorcyclists to enhance safety awareness and protection, while 150 goodie bags containing road safety kits and informational pamphlets were prepared for distribution to road users, particularly drivers.
