KUCHING: A seminar on Engineering Solutions for Soft Ground and Peat Soil: Challenges, Innovations and Best Practices drew engineers from across Sarawak to discuss innovative and practical approaches to addressing the state’s unique geotechnical challenges.
Organised by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) – Geotechnical Engineering Technical Division and IEM Sarawak Branch in collaboration with the Malaysian Geotechnical Society (MGS) and the International Geosynthetics Society Malaysian Chapter (MyIGS), the event was attended by Public Works Deparment (PWD) Sarawak director Datuk Dr Cassidy Morris.
In his speech, Cassidy thanked the organisers for hosting a timely and meaningful seminar that tackles engineering challenges particularly those related to soft ground and peat soil conditions in Sarawak.

He pointed out that PWD Sarawak was pleased to support the seminar by providing the venue, a gesture reflecting the department’s commitment not only to professional development but also to technical discoursing and knowledge sharing within the engineering community.
“Sarawak faces unique engineering challenges, especially in areas with soft ground and peat soils. This seminar offered an important platform for engineers from the public sector, private sector, and academia to exchange ideas, learn from experienced practitioners, and explore innovative, practical, and sustainable engineering solutions,” he said.
Cassidy added that insights gained from such programmes extend beyond individual professional growth as it contributes directly to safer infrastructure delivery, improved engineering practices, and more resilient development outcomes for Sarawak.
PWD Sarawak has reaffirmed its commitment to continuous learning and collaboration and pledged to continue supporting professional bodies such as IEM, MGS, and MyIGS in organising technical programmes that strengthen the engineering profession and the construction industry.
