KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap presented a RM130,000 cheque under the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) to Pastor Augustine Fung, representing BEM The Way, to fund upgrading works at the church premises.

The contribution aims to improve the church’s facilities to ensure a safer, more comfortable and more conducive environment for worship, community activities and social outreach programmes that benefit the surrounding community.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Saturday, Wilfred Yap reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to religious freedom, inclusivity and mutual respect among all faiths.

“UNIFOR reflects Sarawak’s unique strength — unity in diversity. This allocation is not just for infrastructure improvement, but a recognition of the important role religious institutions play in fostering community cohesion, compassion and social responsibility,” he said.

He added that the Sarawak government, under the leadership of the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, remains steadfast in supporting places of worship across all faiths, ensuring that no community is left behind.

Representatives of BEM The Way expressed their appreciation for the support, noting that the funds will go a long way in upgrading essential facilities to better serve congregants and expand community-focused activities.

Yap also commended the church leadership and volunteers for their continued service to the community and encouraged ongoing collaboration to strengthen harmony and unity in Kota Sentosa.
