KUCHING: A total of 380 flood evacuees from 97 families are currently taking shelter at two temporary relief centres (PPS) here as at 4:00 pm today (Dec. 31) after floodwaters inundated several low-lying areas.
The Sarawak Civil Defence Force (APM) said the relief centres were opened at about 7:00 am following continuous heavy rain since Tuesday night (Dec. 30) that affected areas in Taman Desa Wira and Kampung Sinar Budi Baru.
Of the total, 199 evacuees from 53 families are housed at PPS Dewan Masyarakat Stapok, while another 181 people from 44 families are sheltering at PPS Dewan R. Piang, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru.
The agency said relief operations at both centres are being jointly managed by multiple agencies, including the Police, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Social Welfare Department (JKM), People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS), and the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UPKS).
Meanwhile, monitoring in Kampung Sungai Bedaun and Kampung Laruk Skim found the situation to be under control, with no evacuations required so far.
Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to immediately contact the emergency line should water levels rise and evacuation become necessary.
