KUCHING: Sarawak water polo is mapping out a demanding 2026 campaign, with overseas exposure trips and key age-group tournaments lined up.
These exposures are essential as the state water polo team targets a strong showing at the SUKMA (Malaysia Games).
Sarawak water polo head coach Voon Yong Hui said preparations are still in the early stages, with several programmes awaiting approval and budget confirmation, including a proposed overseas exposure tour during the Hari Raya school break.
Perth and Shanghai are currently being considered as potential destinations, with the final decision depending on financial feasibility.
Looking ahead to SUKMA, Voon expressed confidence in the men’s Under-22 squad, describing them as competitive and capable of mounting a serious gold medal challenge.
“For the men’s team, if we want to target gold, I think it’s quite comparable and should not be a problem,” he told Sarawak Tribune at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre recently.
The women’s team, meanwhile, remains in contention for a podium finish, although Voon acknowledged that winning gold may be more challenging.
“For the women, we can still target a medal, but gold might be difficult,” he added.
Sarawak athletes are also scheduled to compete in the Malaysian Age Group Championships in February, followed by the Asian Age Group Championships in March, which will involve Under-18 players.
Voon confirmed that three players with SEA Games experience remain actively involved, a factor he believes will ease the transition into the new season.
In addition, Sarawak is preparing for the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) games, scheduled for early June, while the water polo competition at SUKMA is expected to take place in August.
“Everything has just started, so now we’re waiting for the programme. Once that’s confirmed, we will finalise the budget,” said Voon.
He added that applications for the programme have already been submitted to Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC).
Similar overseas exposure plans are also being considered for the Sarawak swimming team, including a possible three-week training stint in China, although these plans have yet to be finalised.
