KUCHING: Narcotics police dealt a blow to drug activity in the city with separate raids that led to the seizure of various drugs worth RM4,404 over two days.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the operations, carried out on Monday (Jan 5) and Tuesday (Jan 6), resulted in the arrest of three local men.

“At around 3.25 pm on Jan 5, narcotics officers detained a 31-year-old man at the five-foot way of a hotel along Jalan Tabuan. Further checks uncovered a packet of suspected methamphetamine weighing 5.15g, with an estimated value of RM566.

“Shortly after, the team arrested a 36-year-old man at a hotel parking area along the same road and seized two packets of suspected methamphetamine weighing 5.83g, valued at RM638,” he said.

Urine screening tests found the first suspect positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, while the second tested positive for methamphetamine.

Both suspects, who have no prior records, are being remanded for three days until Jan 9 to assist investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Alexson added that the third suspect, aged 24, was taken into custody the next day at 12.40am in front of a café along Jalan Tun Jugah.

“Police seized five green packets containing a powdery substance believed to be MDMA, weighing 248.10g and estimated to be worth RM3,200.

“Although his urine test was negative for drugs, the first-time offender is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, upon conviction.

“He has been remanded for six days until Jan 12 to facilitate investigations,” he said.

The successful operations were the result of sustained intelligence-gathering and cooperation from the public.

He assured that police will not compromise with anyone involved in drug-related activities as possession, trafficking or protection of drug-related activities constitutes a serious offence under the law.

Members of the public with information on drug crimes are urged to report them via Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) hotline at 012-2087222 or Sarawak NCID hotline at 017-5929211.
