Topspeed’s 13 qualify to take the plunge at Malaysian Invitational

MIRI: Topspeed Swimming Club made a big splash at the 52nd Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championships, winning 93 medals and qualifying 13 swimmers for the upcoming Malaysian Invitational.

Coach David Chung said it shows the team’s hard work paying off, as the Malaysian Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship is to be held on February 5-8, 2026.

The team secured 29 gold, 30 silver, and 34 bronze medals during the three-day meet from January 2 to 4, demonstrating strong talent across various age groups.

“It was a wonderful way to start the new year as Top Speed Aquatic Swimming Club proudly took part in the swimming championship.

“Our swimmers performed exceptionally well, earning a total of 90 medals – 29 gold, 30 silver and 34 bronze. It’s a proud moment for the whole team,” he told Sarawak Tribune recently.

Several swimmers stood out with Best Girl awards: Carissa Chong dominated the 9 years and under category with 5 golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze; Yuen En Chee excelled in the 12-13 years group with 7 golds and 3 silvers; while Liysha Liung Chen topped the 14-15 years category with 6 golds and 1 silver.

Celestine Baru, Celine Tiong, Yuen Zi En, Claire Lau, and Janelle also contributed to the medal tally.

On the boys’ side, Ethan Yii led with 3 golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze, followed by Bong Rui Jie with 2 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.

Other team members also brought home medals, highlighting the squad’s depth.

Coach Chung expressed pride that 13 swimmers qualified for the Malaysian Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship, scheduled for February 5 to 8, 2026 – the largest group from the club to qualify so far.

He also thanked Gymkhana Club Miri for providing training facilities and the Miri Amateur Swimming Association for selecting 37 swimmers to represent the club.

“Thanks to everyone who has supported and believed in our swimmers. The journey continues,” said Coach Chung.

Topspeed Swimming Club’s strong showing at this championship highlights their commitment to developing young swimming talent and their growing reputation in Sarawak’s competitive swimming scene.
