KUCHING: Sarawak has announced plans to host international cruise ships within the next two years, coinciding with a new terminal under construction in the Damai area.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Hall and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the development is expected to create new opportunities for hosting international-level sporting events in the region.
“This includes the Santubong International Trail Run, which will see participation from the DBKU for the first time this year.
“When these cruise ships arrive, bringing between 2,000 and 3,000 tourists at a time, we will be able to invite them to take part in the International Santubong Trail Run.
“I have informed Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) of this potential, and we are working together to further expand this programme, as international participation is expected to increase in the coming years,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the launch of the DBKU 2026 Events Calendar and the Kuching Car Free Morning (KCFM) programme at Padang Merdeka, here today (Jan 18).
Earlier, the KCFK programme has once again kicked off for 2026, continuing its role as one of the city’s most popular and iconic events.
“Since its introduction, the programme has provided residents, especially families, with an important opportunity to engage in recreational activities together, creating a regular occasion for community bonding.
“Additionally, one of the main objectives of this programme is to ensure that we are aligned with the initiatives undertaken by the Sarawak government and the Malaysian government to enhance environmental sustainability.
“At the city level, this programme helps improve the sustainability of Kuching by reducing carbon emissions through car-free activities,” he said.
