KUCHING: About 70 university students from ASEZ, a university student volunteer group, brought cheer to residents of Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching during a welfare and cultural outreach programme held on Wednesday.
The activity, organised by ASEZ under the World Mission Society Church of God, aimed to foster intergenerational bonding while promoting care, respect and compassion for senior citizens.
Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching principal Dayang Siti Nurshamira Awang Talip expressed appreciation for the students’ initiative and commitment, noting the positive impact of the activities on the residents.
“We are very happy today and the residents also seem very happy with the activities carried out.
“Keep up the good work. Hopefully this will not be the last time ASEZ holds activities with Rumah Seri Kenangan,” she said.
The students presented a series of cultural performances, including songs and dances, which enlivened the normally quiet facility and drew smiles and applause from the elderly residents.
Recreational activities such as ring toss, tuho (throwing arrows into a pot) and flag-raising games were also organised to promote physical movement and mental engagement among the seniors.
An ASEZ representative said the initiative was part of the group’s ongoing efforts to show respect and appreciation for the elderly and to encourage their continued well-being.
ASEZ has been actively involved in volunteer initiatives across Malaysia, including environmental clean-up campaigns in Sarawak, Sabah, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor.
The group has received various recognitions for its volunteer efforts, including certificates of appreciation from government agencies in Sarawak and international awards such as the President’s Volunteer Service Award in the United States.
ASEZ, which stands for “Save the Earth from A to Z”, operates in multiple countries worldwide and carries out activities ranging from community service and environmental protection to disaster relief, reflecting its commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development.
