KUCHING: Blood supplies for types A, B and AB are currently running low at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), prompting an urgent call for eligible donors from these blood groups to come forward.
In a statement on Thursday (Jan 22), SGH said the decline comes despite encouraging responses from donors of other blood groups, with demand for A, B and AB blood rising sharply due to daily medical and surgical needs.
The hospital said usage of these blood types in routine operations and emergency care had increased significantly, raising concerns that existing stocks may not be sufficient to meet future demand if the trend continues.
HUS appealed to donors with blood types A, B and AB who are eligible to donate to visit the blood donation centre and help stabilise supplies.
The hospital also said donors with blood type O remained welcome, noting that demand for group O blood remained consistently high.
“Patients in emergency wards are among those most in need of blood transfusions, and timely donations are crucial,” the statement said.
The hospital’s Blood Donation Centre is open daily from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm and members of the public are encouraged to check ongoing blood donation campaigns listed in the hospital’s pinned social media posts.
