KUCHING: Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) reaffirms its commitment to accelerating project implementation and delivering world-class infrastructure as it prepares for the transition from the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) to the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

PWD director Datuk Dr Cassidy Morris said in a Facebook post on Friday (Jan 23) that the department would continue to strengthen integrity and governance to ensure sustainable and high-impact development for the state.

According to the post, Sarawak PWD recorded significant achievements under the 12MP, with total project values reaching RM72.70 billion across 15,107 projects statewide.

“Of this total, 11,902 projects valued at RM27.56 billion have been completed, while 1,373 projects worth RM26.15 billion are currently under construction. Another 1,832 projects valued at RM18.99 billion are at the pre-contract stage,” he said.

Cassidy noted that the physical infrastructure sector saw the completion of 1,795.659 kilometres of roads, 35 bridges and 90 schools, which have strengthened connectivity, improved access to education and enhanced the quality of life, particularly in rural areas.

He added that rural development efforts were further bolstered through bridge projects, with three bridges fully completed, 33 bridges tendered and 29 bridges currently under construction throughout Sarawak to improve connectivity between communities and economic centres.

Beyond physical development, Cassidy said Sarawak PWD has also implemented several strategic initiatives to enhance governance and departmental performance, including the Project Court, Safety Tribunal, Project Take-Off Responsibility (PTOR) and the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Unit.

“These initiatives aim to expedite the resolution of project issues, enhance site safety, strengthen accountability and drive digitalisation and the use of smart technology in project management,” he said.

On organisational culture, he outlined four core values to guide Sarawak PWD personnel – Dream Big, Make It Happen, Do Not Be Content With Weaknesses, and Ask What You Can Do – which he said would help cultivate a proactive, resilient and high-performing workforce.

Cassidy said it encouraged PWD personnel to uphold excellence, integrity and teamwork in delivering sustainable, high-quality infrastructure for Sarawak.
