KUCHING: Kuching City FC’s 2-0 victory over Penang in the Malaysia Cup quarter-final on Saturday (Jan 24) signals a rising standard of football in Sarawak.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the win reflected the steady improvement of the Kuching-based team, widely regarded as representing Sarawak on the national stage.
“Kuching City FC is always seen as Sarawak’s representative, and this victory shows that the quality of the team from the Land of Hornbills has improved,” he said when commenting on the match before the trial ride for the Kuching Metro Bus at Electra House today.
The victory ensures Kuching City FC’s place in the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup, keeping Sarawak’s hopes alive in the competition.
Abdul Karim said strong public support remains crucial, noting that visiting teams often take note of the backing received by Kuching City FC whenever matches are held in the state.
“When people come to the stadium, they see Kuching City FC as Sarawak’s team. The support from the fans is very important,” he said.
He also congratulated the team’s management and players, describing the win as a morale booster for both the team and football development in Sarawak.
“I would like to congratulate Kuching City FC chairman, Datuk Fazruddin, on the victory. This success gives confidence that Sarawak football is moving in the right direction,” he concluded.
