KUCHING: Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) Sarawak pensioners are encouraged to join Persatuan Pesara RTM Kuching to strengthen welfare support among retired staff.

Its chairman, Datuk Ahmad Shafiee Yaman said the newly established association is open to all RTM pensioners in Sarawak, particularly those residing in the city, regardless of race or religion.

“As its name suggests, the association’s primary objective is to look after the welfare of RTM pensioners in Sarawak.

“Special attention is accorded, where possible, to members who are physically challenged or suffering from chronic illnesses,” he said in a statement issued in conjunction with the association’s Second Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at a hotel here on Sunday.

Beyond welfare assistance, the association also seeks to revive and strengthen the spirit of brotherhood, solidarity and cooperation forged during members’ years of service with RTM.

“With increased membership, the association hopes to further strengthen its manpower and capacity, enabling it to organise more activities and better safeguard the welfare of its members,” he said.

Over the past year, the association has organised visits to senior members and former RTM staff who are ill, bedridden, or facing serious health challenges, with the aim of providing comfort, encouragement and companionship whenever possible.

At its inaugural general meeting held last year, Ahmad Shafiee, who is also a former director of RTM Sarawak, was unanimously elected chairman of the multi-racial welfare organisation.

Currently, the association has more than 100 members from various racial backgrounds.

Sunday’s AGM marks the second annual gathering of this young association formed by not-so-young members.

RTM pensioners who have yet to join the association are invited to attend the AGM as observers.

The meeting was followed by a hi-tea reception to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Horse in conjunction with the Chinese New Year, reflecting the association’s inclusive spirit as members come together to celebrate festive occasions of all cultures.

The chairman and committee members also took the opportunity to express their heartfelt appreciation to all donors and well-wishers and expressed hope for their continued cooperation and support in the years ahead.
