SAMARAHAN: The Stitching Ceremony for the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge was held yesterday to mark the final phase of construction, with the project expected to be fully completed and opened to the public in May 2026.
The historic ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure Development), Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, reflecting the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to strengthening the state’s strategic connectivity network.
According to the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD), the two-lane, single-carriageway bridge, built to PWD R5 Standard, spans Batang Lupar with a total length of 4,884 metres and is supported by 87 river piers, making it one of the most significant bridge projects in the state.
“Once fully completed and opened to the public in May 2026, Batang Lupar 1 Bridge is expected to become the longest river-crossing bridge in Malaysia.
“It will also stand as an engineering landmark and a symbol of Sarawak’s progress,” it said.
The construction of this permanent bridge is intended to replace the Batang Lupar ferry service, providing a safer, more efficient and continuous route between Sebuyau and Triso.
It will also enhance connectivity in the coastal areas.
In addition, the project is expected to stimulate economic, agricultural and tourism activities in the areas involved, thereby contributing to sustainable socio-economic growth in Sarawak’s coastal region.
PWD Sarawak will remain committed to ensuring that every project is implemented to the highest standards of quality, safety, and integrity, in line with the aspiration to develop infrastructure that brings long-term benefits to the people and the future of the state.
