KUCHING: The United States (U.S.) sees strong potential for expanded investment in Sarawak, particularly as the state continues to grow economically and position itself as an attractive destination for global businesses.

U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia Edgar D. Kagan said American companies have had a long-standing presence in Sarawak, spanning more than 125 years, and are expected to play a bigger role in the state’s future development.

“I am proud of the role that American companies have played and continue to play in Sarawak,” he said during a press conference with the Sarawak media at the Sarawak State Library today.

He added that he has consistently encouraged U.S. firms looking at Malaysia to also consider opportunities in Sarawak.

While current U.S. investment in Sarawak is largely concentrated in the energy sector and electronics and electrical (E&E) manufacturing, including the Western Digital plant, Kagan said he expects a broader range of American companies to explore opportunities in the state over time, in line with Sarawak’s economic growth.

“Education was highlighted as a key area of synergy between Sarawak and the United States,” he said.

Kagan said the U.S. strongly supports efforts to ensure Sarawakians have access to world-class education, noting the strength of American universities and the potential for greater academic exchange.

He also expressed support for encouraging more American students to study in Malaysia, including in Sarawak, describing this as an important way to deepen people-to-people ties and long-term cooperation.

Kagan further highlighted the strength of the partnership between the U.S. and Sarawak, citing the American Corner at the state library as one of the most successful globally.

Established in 2004, the American Corner recently marked its 20th anniversary, reflecting what he described as a strong and enduring collaboration with the Sarawak state government and the state library.

On future investment prospects, Kagan identified several sectors with high potential, including renewable energy, energy transmission and management, advanced manufacturing, technology, and data centres.

He noted that Sarawak’s abundant energy and water resources make it well-positioned to attract data centre investments.

However, he stressed that Sarawak’s greatest strength lies in its people.

“The most valuable asset Sarawak has is its talent, and that this would continue to make the state an attractive destination for American and other foreign investors,” he said.
