KUCHING: The Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) has honoured the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) with its prestigious Gold Recognition Award in recognition of Sarawak’s outstanding contribution to hosting major international junior tennis tournaments.

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah expressed pride over the accolade, saying it is a rare achievement for any local association to receive such international recognition.

“Well, of course, when you get an international recognition like this, it’s not easy for any venue or association to receive an international award.

“That’s why I feel very happy as the minister looking after sports,” he said after unveiling the SLTA 2026 International Tournament calendar and announcing the ATF Gold Recognition Award, here today (Jan 26).

Abdul Karim noted that the Gold Recognition Award reflects the Asian Tennis Federation’s confidence in Sarawak’s passion and commitment to developing tennis through the successful organisation of multiple international tournaments.

Sarawak will host the World Chinese Tennis Federation (WCTF) International Championship, a four-day event from April 15 to 18, expected to feature around 300 talented tennis players, including delegations from around the world.

Among other tournaments this year are the 44th Sarawak Premier Cup ITF Junior Tennis J300 edition from Apr 6 to 12; the ITF Under-14 International Junior Championship (Boys) from Apr 19 to 26, followed by the girls’ category from Apr 26 to May 3.

Meanwhile, SLTA president Datuk Patrick Liew expressed gratitude for the support from the Sarawak state government over the past three decades.

“Without their support, no matter how hard I work, it would not have been possible.

“That encouragement makes you want to contribute to the sport’s development,” Liew said.

He also praised the dedication of SLTA’s committee members, many of whom have been involved for over 20 years, describing their collective efforts as a labour of love.

Out of 44 countries in Asia, only three—including Sarawak have received the ATF Gold Recognition Award, placing Sarawak alongside tennis hubs in China and Kazakhstan.
