KUCHING: Cultural events are more than just initiatives to promote Malaysia’s multicultural unity.
Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, praised Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and RedFM for demonstrating Malaysia’s unity in diversity through a Chinese New Year (CNY) Singing Competition.
He emphasised that the initiative went beyond mere talk of harmony.
Yap spoke to the reporters after officiating at the Spring Gala Star 2.0 RedFM Audition Programme at Auditorium P Ramlee, RTM Kuching today (Jan 31).
The assemblyman commended RTM for organising the competition, particularly as the Chinese New Year approaches.
“The Chinese New Year is coming, so when RTM does a programme like this, it shows our concern that we are a multi-racial society,” he said.
“It is very important that we not only talk about unity but we must also show unity, and this programme actually shows what unity is.”
The competition’s format has been designed to maximise public engagement, with the finals scheduled to take place at Aeon Mall.
This venue choice was praised for its accessibility, allowing the wider public to witness Malaysia’s multicultural harmony in action.
“With the venue being set at AEON Mall Kuching, the public can see how a multi-racial society should look like.
“When you can observe those things, you can empathise with all the different cultures we have here in Sarawak,” he added.
The semi-finals saw talented contestants showcasing their vocal abilities, with the finals promising to bring the celebration of unity and cultural diversity to an even broader audience in the heart of the community.
