SIBU: Three children were found drowned in a sewage pond near the Sibujaya flats here yesterday (Feb 4).
The incident that has cast a spotlight on safety lapses at restricted areas.
The victims, including two girls, were found in the pond estimated to be about two metres deep, despite the site being fenced off by authorities.
They had already been pulled to the edge of the pond by members of the public before firefighters arrived, but were found unconscious.
Firefighters from Sibu Jaya station were dispatched to the scene, about 3km away, after receiving an emergency call at 4.03pm.
All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and their remains were handed over to the police for further action.
The children were identified as Macx Devdynne Sharie Merdeka, 12; Daniella Arissa Tayas Maringgai, 10; and Macx Welwait Merdeka, 9.
It is understood that the sewage pond was fenced, but gaps and weak points may have allowed easy access.
The authorities have parents and guardians to remain vigilant and closely monitor their children’s movements, especially near potential hazards such as ponds, construction sites and drains.
