KUCHING: The role of the media in shaping public understanding and fostering unity remains increasingly important in an era where information spreads rapidly and narratives can easily be distorted.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said media practitioners play a vital role in Sarawak’s nation-building efforts, particularly in ensuring information is verified, balanced and contributes positively to society.
Speaking at a gathering with media practitioners held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations, he described the occasion as a family-style gathering that reflected the close relationship between the community and the media in Sarawak.
“The media and news organisations play a very important role for Sarawak nation-building,” he said, noting that while technological advancements have enabled anyone to create and share information, professional journalism remains essential in maintaining accuracy and public trust.
He said the rise of social media and artificial intelligence has created new challenges, where unverified or partially true information can spread quickly, sometimes causing damage before facts are clarified, making responsible reporting more important than ever.
At the same time, Dr Sim emphasised the importance of promoting constructive and balanced narratives that reflect Sarawak’s progress and shared values, adding that unity and cooperation remain key as the state moves towards its long-term development goals.
He said Sarawak’s growth has brought increasing expectations from within and outside the state, placing responsibility on all sectors of society, including the media, to contribute towards a common direction that benefits the people.
“As Sarawak moves forward, every sector must play its role, including the media, in sharing positive values and encouraging society to move forward together,” he said.
Dr Sim also highlighted ongoing improvements in areas such as healthcare development and education investment, noting that these efforts are part of broader initiatives aimed at improving quality of life and ensuring long-term sustainability for future generations.
He added that recognition received by Sarawak’s healthcare institutions at international level reflects the dedication of local professionals and the state’s continued efforts to strengthen public services for the benefit of Sarawakians.
Held ahead of the festive season, the gathering also served as an opportunity for informal interaction between media practitioners and community leaders.
