SARIKEI: Efforts to safeguard water resources in Meradong have been strengthened with several river conservation projects covering Sungai Binatang and Sungai Tulai.

Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Datuk Sri Huang Tiong Sii, said the initiative aims to ensure the sustainability of water resources in the district by maintaining river water quality so that it remains clean, safe and suitable for use by the local community.

“The scope of the projects involves river cleaning, riverbed deepening, and bank reinforcement as early mitigation measures to reduce the risk of flooding, especially during the rainy season.

“Besides preserving water quality, these projects also aim to raise public awareness on the importance of keeping rivers clean, while supporting sustainable development and the well-being of local residents,” he said.

He said this during a site visit for the preparation of the Bill of Quantities for the River Conservation Works Project in the Meradong District today (Feb 11), which was also attended by officers from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

Huang, who is the local Member of Parliament and Repok state assemblyman, said that among the sites involved is Sungai Binatang in the Palaie area of Meradong, covering one tributary, with the site visit led by DID Assistant Engineer, Nash Tasha.

The conservation projects also include Sungai Tulai in the Koperasi Tulai and Jalan Tulai areas of Meradong, involving three tributaries, with the site visit attended by DID Assistant Engineer, Aneves Lang.

Another project site is Sungai Binatang along Jalan Chai Hing, Meradong, covering one tributary, with the site visit attended by DID Assistant Engineer, Alwami Abdullah.

The visits to these three project sites also aim to ensure that the planning and implementation of the projects run smoothly and comply with the specified standards.

For the visits, Huang was represented by Sarikei People’s Service Centre officer, Wong Soon Mee, along with the team from the Repok State Constituency Service Centre.
