KUCHING: The Sarawak Unity Education Fund (SUEF) has contributed RM100,000 to the Sarawak Association for the Welfare of Intellectually Disabled Children (PERKATA) as part of its ongoing efforts to support the association’s educational and welfare programmes.
SUEF chairman Datuk Richard Lee Say Tshin said associations such as PERKATA require greater support from the private sector to further strengthen their educational initiatives.
“We would also like to encourage the local private sector to support PERKATA as they operate a school for children with disabilities.
“PERKATA has served for 54 years and relies on donations to support children with disabilities. It is indeed a noble undertaking, as it is not an easy task, yet they have persevered for more than five decades.
“We hope our modest contribution will serve as encouragement for other private sector players to come forward with their support,” he told a press conference after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on Wednesday (Feb 11).
Lee added that the contribution marked SUEF’s second donation to PERKATA in recognition of the association’s efforts in providing education and care for children with disabilities in the Kuching area.
Meanwhile, he said SUEF has awarded 31 scholarships to eligible Sarawakian students amounting to a total of RM1.4 million.
Abang Johari has served as the Patron of SUEF since 2023, reflecting the strong support of the state leadership for this private-sector initiative.
