BAU: Just days before Chinese New Year, Hope Place Kuching paid a visit to 65-year-old Jong Nam Teck, a man living alone in a remote part of Kampung Sungai Pinang here.

Jong, who has been receiving continuous support from the NGO, relies on their food aid to meet his daily needs.

Despite battling multiple health issues, including a stroke in 2014, ongoing asthma and recent heart procedures such as a bypass and angioplasty in 2023, he continues to manage his daily life with remarkable independence.

A bachelor, Jong once cared for his 90-year-old mother who now lives with his siblings.

He used to work as a lorry assistant but retired in 2020 due to his health.

Living in an isolated orchard, far from the main road, Jong rarely ventures out, relying on his old motorbike for necessary trips.

Nonetheless, he maintains his home with care, cooking and managing household chores on his own, earning praise from Hope Place for keeping his house neat and tidy.

During the recent visit, Hope Place brought along donors and festive gifts, including oranges, ang pow, and other Chinese New Year goodies.

“My siblings and my mother are coming here during Chinese New Year. The house will be noisy and lively,” Jong said.

The NGO expressed hope that the strong family bond Jong cherishes will continue for generations.

Those wishing to support Jong or similar initiatives by Hope Place (Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching, PKHK) can contact 082-505987 or 013-5672775.

Donations are welcome, and receipts will be provided upon request.
