Fourteen workers escape unharmed as quarters engulfed in fire

BETONG: Fourteen male workers escaped unharmed after a workers’ quarters near Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Saka here was 85 per cent destroyed in a fire this morning (Feb 13).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received an emergency call at 10.20 am and deployed a team from Betong station to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a semi-permanent structure measuring about 120×20 square feet with 24 rooms already heavily engulfed in flames.

The quarters, owned by VERDE FM, were occupied by 14 male workers aged between 40 and 51.

No casualties were reported.

Firefighters carried out extinguishing operations using the RECEO concept, deploying one first-aid hose line and a 200-foot hose with a nozzle, drawing water from the fire engine tank.

Due to the absence of a nearby fire hydrant, crews had to shuttle water from the nearest hydrant to sustain operations.

The fire was brought under control and overhaul works were conducted to ensure complete extinguishment before the team returned to the station.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
