KUALA LUMPUR: More than 10,000 international travellers were welcomed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on the first day of Chinese New Year, signalling strong tourism momentum for the year ahead.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, said the ministry, together with Tourism Malaysia, greeted visitors at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2 early in the morning in a festive and welcoming atmosphere.

The welcoming programme featured traditional attire showcases, lion dance performances, and appearances by the Visit Malaysia 2026 mascots, Wira and Manja, dressed in festive attire to create a distinctive arrival experience.

“On the first day of the Chinese New Year, we begin the year with warmth at Malaysia’s gateway by welcoming visitors without pause,” he said.

Between 6 am and 8 am, more than 6,800 travellers from 30 international cities arrived at KLIA Terminal 1.

At the same time, KLIA Terminal 2 welcomed over 3,200 travellers from 18 international destinations from early morning until before noon.

Tiong said the arrivals included multiple early-morning flights from major cities in China, with more international flights continuing to land throughout the afternoon.

“The bustling activity at our national gateway this morning reflects Malaysia’s strong international connectivity and the continued positive momentum in our tourism recovery,” he said.

Tiong pointed out that Malaysia is a country where Chinese New Year traditions are preserved and passed down with authenticity across generations.

“From festive rituals to the spirit of togetherness, the Chinese New Year is a cultural legacy shared across generations.

“By bringing this festive atmosphere into the airport, we hope visitors feel, from their very first step into Malaysia, our respect for culture and our sincere, natural hospitality,” he said.

Tiong also expressed appreciation to representatives of international and China-based airline partners who participated in the welcoming event, including China Southern Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Shandong Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Qingdao Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and Air China.

“This strong collaboration plays a vital role in strengthening regional connectivity and promoting two-way travel.

“As we enter Visit Malaysia 2026, we remain committed to enhancing the visitor journey from the very first point of contact, and to showcasing Malaysia as not only a travel destination, but a country that respects tradition, embraces diversity, and is truly worth returning to,” Tiong said.

At the same time, Tiong also took the opportunity to wish Malaysians and visitors a smooth and prosperous Year of the Horse, expressing hope for “success in every stride” in the year ahead.
