MIRI: Police arrested a 20-year-old local man suspected of operating an online gambling top-up service, in a crackdown on illegal betting activities in the city.
The suspect was detained at about 7.40pm following a raid by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Miri district police headquarters on a business premises along Jalan Bendahara.
Oofficers seized a mobile phone believed to have been used to facilitate the sale of online gambling credit, along with a sum of cash suspected to be proceeds from the activity.
The man was taken to the CID office at Miri police headquarters to assist investigations. The case is being probed under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries stiff penalties on conviction.
