KUCHING: A Ramadan gathering in Demak Laut evolved beyond a customary breaking of fast, emerging as a platform to strengthen community cohesion and advance human capital development across the constituency.
Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability and Demak Laut assemblyman Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said balanced progress between physical infrastructure and human capital remains central to the area’s development agenda.
Held on Saturday (Feb 21) at UCSI Hotel, the Sungkey and Terawih Leadership Programme brought together an estimated 240 guests comprising local leaders, community chiefs, women and youth leaders, mosque committee members, Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), Residents’ Associations (KRT) and SABERKAS representatives.
According to a press statement, a total of 16 mosques and 16 surau in the Demak Laut constituency received annual allocations to ensure the smooth implementation of religious and community activities throughout the fasting month.

Financial assistance was also extended to 10 JKKK, 20 KRT and 40 branch committees to support community initiatives, including the distribution of bubur lambuk.
In total, RM880,000 was disbursed under the allocations.
“We must continue this strong struggle. We need to understand the concept of balancing physical development and human capital development to maintain a community that is truly progressive in this world and the hereafter,” Dr Hazland said.
He revealed that six new mosques are currently in various stages of implementation, including Masjid Pine Villa, which is under construction, Masjid Sejingkat and Masjid Goebilt, which are in the tender process, Masjid Senari, which will be tendered, and Masjid Tanjung Bako and Masjid Muhibbah Seberang Pending, which are in the design phase.
Beyond infrastructure, he noted that educational advancement remains a key benchmark of leadership success.
Between 200 and 250 students from the Demak Laut constituency reportedly gain admission into higher learning institutions annually, reflecting what he described as the effectiveness of sustained human capital initiatives.
