DARO: A search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched after a 53-year-old woman was reported missing in a forested area at Kampung Betanak here last night (Feb 23).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received an emergency call at 8.15pm.

A Bomba spokesperson said the victim, identified as Suriya Merais, had entered the forest with 10 others to collect fruits but failed to return with the group.

She is believed to have strayed from the original route.

Firefighters arrived at the location at 9.19pm and gathered information from police and villagers before commencing search efforts at 9.26pm.

Initial searches were conducted within a one-kilometre radius from the last known location.

However, the victim was not found.

A briefing was later held with the family before the SAR operation was suspended at 10.50pm and scheduled to resume today.

A total of six firefighters were deployed, assisted by personnel from the police (eight members), Civil Defence Force (five members), People’s Volunteer Corps (three members) and about 60 villagers.
