KUCHING: Kuching City FC have a crucial opportunity this Sunday night (Mar 1) as they seek to reignite their Malaysia Super League campaign against Immigration FC.
The Cats head into the encounter eager to bounce back after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Selangor FC last week, a result that tightened the race for second place in the league standings.
Despite the setback, Kuching City remained firmly in contention among the top sides and knew that three points could prove pivotal as the competition entered its decisive phase. With slim margins separating the chasing teams, consistency was key in determining the final placings.
After 16 matches, the Cats sat fourth in the standings with 31 points, just four points behind third-placed Selangor on 35 points, while Kuala Lumpur City occupied second place with 36 points.
Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) continue to lead the table emphatically.
Sunday’s clash against Immigration FC presents an opportunity not only to recover lost ground but also to restore momentum.
Head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak said he and his team must focus on their own responsibilities and control what they can.
“The important thing is that we try not to drop any more points. After this, we only have one last game against Kuala Lumpur City.
“The teams below us, it’s not that we don’t respect them but we have to take our chances when they are given. I think it’s still open. Second, third, fourth — it’s still open.
“This is where the challenge comes. We need to work harder rather than be up there in a comfort zone. We want to push ourselves,” he said in a post-match press conference recently.
With the league approaching its final stretch, every match carries added significance.
For Kuching City, the equation is simple: secure maximum points and keep the pressure on their closest rivals in the race for a historic runner-up finish.
