KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on Chinese school graduates and young Sarawakians to join the state civil service and help build a stronger and more prosperous Sarawak.

He said the Sarawak government welcomes greater participation from Chinese youths in public service.

“As the head of the Sarawak government, I sincerely invite you to join the Sarawak civil service and become part of our team in building a stronger Sarawak.

“Sarawak’s development is not achieved by words alone, but through steady and continuous action and effort. The future belongs to the younger generation, and we welcome more Chinese school graduates to join public service and work together with the government to build a stronger and prosperous Sarawak,” he said at the Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions 2026 Chinese New Year Gala Dinner here on Sunday (Mar 1).

His text-of-speech was delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He reiterated that Sarawak’s progress depends on consistent effort and commitment, especially from the younger generation.

Abang Johari also acknowledged the significant role of the Chinese community in Sarawak’s historical and economic development, from early commerce to present-day contributions in business, education, technology and professional sectors.

“We see Chinese entrepreneurs contributing to economic growth, educators nurturing talent, professionals serving society, and Chinese associations actively participating in charitable and cultural activities. All these efforts form an essential part of Sarawak’s overall success,” he said.

On education, he reaffirmed that Sarawak took the lead in recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), enabling its holders to gain entry into state universities, apply for scholarships and serve in the state civil service.

He added that annual grants to Chinese independent schools have been increased from RM3 million to RM10 million, with land allocated for commercial development to ensure their long-term sustainability.

“This is not a short-term policy, but a long-term decision grounded on historical understanding and practical needs,” he said, stressing that nurturing talent regardless of ethnic or educational background is a shared Sarawakian value.

The Premier also commended federation president Datuk Seri Richard Wee for his steady leadership and constructive engagement with the government.

“The Sarawak government firmly believes that constructive engagement between civil society and the government ensures that policies better reflect the needs of the people,” he said, thanking the Federation for its continued support and input.

On Sarawak’s rights, Abang Johari assured that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government will continue to defend what rightfully belongs to the state, particularly its oil and gas resources.

“We are for fairness and meaningful cooperation in the orderly exploitation of our resources. It is not our intention to confront any party, and going to court is the last resort,” he said.

At the event, he also approved RM200,000 for the federation’s association fund.
